It is almost spring and time to start thinking about your garden. Here are some ideas to make a green garden that is more water efficient and healthy. The typical home gardener wastes gallons and gallons of water every season. There are many ways to conserve water and use it more effectively and efficiently.
One simple idea is to collect rainwater and reuse it in your garden. The gutters on your house make collecting rainwater quite simple. Just attach a diverter onto your downspout to feeding into a collection container. Make sure your container is covered and the water is used within ten days of harvest to prevent bugs and mosquitos.
Another idea is to group plants needing similar amounts of water together. Also water your plants in the early morning when the cooler temperatures and lack of direct sunlight decreases evaporation. Midday sun evaporates leftover water collected on the foliage preventing mold or other diseases.
I know many people just turn on the hose and waste gallons of water when taking care of their garden. Try a soaker hose or drip irrigation system instead. Otherwise, use a watering can instead of hose. You will be much more efficient in your watering.
