Hypermiling techniques to help you save gas

With gas prices back on the rise and the summer driving season approaching fast, we at The Ecoistabode thought we would revisit hypermiling techniques.  Hypermiling is using a few simple ideas to get every reasonable efficiency from every gallon of gas in your car.  Effectively using hypermiling tricks can save you good money with gas approaching $4 per gallon.

Hypermiling includes techniques of driving slower, gliding down hills, effectively using neutral, and avoiding the gas pedal where possible.  If we would just drive 60mph instead of 70mph we would save gallons of gas per month.  Your car would be happier too as you would not be placing as much stress on your engine.

Gliding down hills and to stops.  Just slide the gear over into neutral and glide away.  Your engine is running on less rpm and thus saving gas and not stressing the engine as much.

Another hypermiling idea is to try to take corners and longer turns by moving to the inside lane. Sure this is not always possible, but when you can it will cut your distance travelled.  I mean you wouldn't want to run 10 miles around a track in the outside lane would you?  No way.  You'll use the inside lane because it cuts your distance.  Less distance equals getting there faster and less gas used.

So think about these hypermiling techniques.  With all the turmoil in the Middle East currently and the summer driving season coming, $4 gas is not far off.  Hypermiling can help your tank of gas stretch a bit farther and that cash in your pocket.
