Green Funerals gaining popularity

This was how it was done for thousands of years.  Environmentally friendly burials.  There is a growing trend in the United States for green funerals.  No hazardous embalming chemicals and an environmentally friendly casket made out of seagrass or some other biodegradable substance.

Only in since the Industrial Revolution have our burials become so environmentally unfriendly.  Transporting bodies long distances during the Civil War led to embalming and then good old American capitalism led to the advent of metal caskets.

"Today, a ten acre cemetery has enough wood to rebuild 40 homes, 20,000 tons of concrete and enough toxic formalin to fill a small backyard swimming pool," said Harris, who has written a book on green funerals titled "Grave Matters: A Journey Through the Modern Funeral Industry to a Natural Way of Burial."

Demand for a greener final act, which remains limited but is growing, is being driven mostly by baby boomers, many of whom are now entering their retirement years.  Not only is it better for the environment, it is also easier on the pocketbook.  No more five thousand dollar caskets.  No concrete grave vault.  No embalming fees.

As technology moves forward it seems funerals and burials are moving forward by taking a step back to our roots.
