The Five Dirtiest Cars in America

Forbes recently came out with their listing of the dirtiest cars in America.  The list not only took into account fuel efficiency but also pollution factors.  They took into account poor gas mileage along with high tailpipe and greenhouse gas emissions.

Cars and trucks account for almost one-third of the total air pollution in the United States.  Progress is being made as next year will see the arrival of several low and emission-free options such as the compact but "ecoboosted" Ford Fiesta and the plug-in electric Chevrolet Volt.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee took the dubious distinction of dirtiest car on the market with an air pollution rating 3/10 of and a city miles per gallon of only 9.  It also recevied a greenhouse gas rating of 1/10.  Here is a summation of the Forbes listing of the dirtiest cars on the market currently:

1. Jeep Grand Cherokee
2. BMW M5 and M6
3. Chevrolet Trailblazer
4. Mercedes Benz CL600 and S600
5. Chrysler Aspen
6. Dodge Dakota

In contrast is the Toyota Prius with a 51 miles per gallon (mpg) city and 48 mpg highway fuel efficiency and very little environmental impact.  With hybrid cars gaining traction and popularity look for the trend of gas guzzlers and polluters to dwindle.
