Could The Gulf oil leak end up bigger than the Exxon Valdez?

As oil continues to flow freely into the Gulf of Mexico the question needs to be asked.  Could this oil leak turn into a bigger environmental disaster than the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska?  With efforts to cut off the flow not seeing any results today data was released projecting that 5,000 barrels of oil were leaking into the Gulf each day.  At that projection it would take about 40 more days unchecked to reach Exxon Valdez levels.

On Thursday evening the edges of the oil slick had reached parts of the Louisiana coastline.  Thicker oil was only 5 miles from the Mississippi delta.  The oil slick could become the nation's worst environmental disasters in decades, threatening hundreds of species of fish, birds and other wildlife along the Gulf Coast.  The area is one of the world's richest seafood grounds, teeming with shrimp, oysters and other marine life.

British Petroleum is asking for help from anyone willing to send aid and it could take almost 3 months to drill a relief well and plug the current leak.  If it takes that kind of time the spill would surpass the Exxon Valdez disaster.

Louisiana fisherman are racing to gather as many oysters and harvest as much shrimp as possible before the onrushing oil slick reaches the fishing grounds.
