Hurricane Alex effects on the Gulf Oil spill
Concerns are growing as Hurricane Alex gains strength in the southern Gulf of Mexico as to how it could effect the ongoing efforts to stem and cleanup the oil spill off Louisiana. Luckily computer models are suggesting Hurricane Alex will stay to the west of the spill site and hit the northern Mexico coast south of Brownsville, Texas. Landfall is expected late Wednesday night to early Thursday morning. That's the good news.
The bad news is that Hurricane Alex will have an impact on the Gulf of Mexico near the spill. Storm surges of 5-6 feet are expected off Louisiana which will be problematic for sure. The surges will hamper efforts of the cleanup vessels in the Gulf trying to roundup and contain the oil on the surface.
The other big issue is that the surge will force oil out in the Gulf inwards towards the beaches of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. Oil will be pushed deeper into the swamplands and nature areas of Louisiana and sweep farther onto the pristine beaches of Destin and the Florida panhandle.
